Congressional District 2 in Virginia is the nation's ultimate "median" district, according to the Cook Partisan Voting Index. There are 217 Democratic congressional districts and 217 Republican congressional districts according to Cook's rating.

In terms of Cook, FiveThirtyEight, and other election analytics services, Virginia CD 2 is firmly in the 34 Ballotpedia "battleground" districts and the 22 "tossup" races across the country for congressional seats now held by Democrats.

For another, the Democratic incumbent has won back-to-back races in the purple district but may have stepped over the line with some GOP voters who had backed her in the past by serving on the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol breach.

The Virginia CD 2 and the commonwealth's CD 7 congressional races will also be two of the nation's most closely watched races in the 2022 midterms.

As part of the Nov. 8 general election, both U.S. House candidates are women veterans of combat, making it a landmark event in the nation's history.

In addition to serving 10 years as a submarine-hunting helicopter pilot aboard ships based in Virginia Beach, Republican state senator Jen Kiggans served in the Navy for 10 years before running for office.
