A coalition of civil rights groups filed a federal lawsuit challenging the radical new voting restrictions in Georgia, arguing that the Republican-backed law aims to make it difficult for people, especially black voters, to cast their ballots.
Among other restrictions, the law imposed stricter identification requirements, limited mailboxes, gave lawmakers the power to take over local elections, and shortened the early voting period for all run-off elections. It also makes it a crime for people to provide food and water to waiting voters.
The legislation alarmed Democrats, who just a few months ago celebrated historic victories in the presidential election and two Senate campaigns in Georgia that helped hand over control of the White House and the US Senate to their party in Washington.
