United States China tensions rise with Pelosi's arrival in Taiwan

Nancy Pelosi became the highest-ranking American official in 25 years to arrive in Taiwan on Tuesday night. China and the United States are experiencing increased tensions following Pelosi's visit. In China, Taiwan is considered an integral part of its territory, and foreign governments are welcome to pay visits, recognizing Taiwan's sovereignty if needed.

During Pelosi's trip, Beijing threatened “resolute and strong measures.” Assuring Beijing that U.S. policy on Taiwan would not change, the Biden administration didn't explicitly urge her to cancel.
