Sen.Cornyn Backtracks After Op-Ed on Filibuster as Trump Pushes republicans to Pass SAVE America Act

A political firestorm erupted on Capitol Hill Wednesday after Senator John Cornyn appeared to reverse himself just hours after publicly supporting aggressive action to pass President Donald Trump’s election security legislation.

In an op-ed published in the New York Post, Cornyn declared he would support changes to Senate rules—potentially even reforms to the filibuster—if necessary to push the SAVE America Act through the Senate and onto the president’s desk. The bill would require proof of U.S. citizenship to vote in federal elections, a measure conservatives argue is essential to restoring election integrity.

But within hours, Cornyn appeared to retreat when confronted by reporters on Capitol Hill. When asked about “nuking the filibuster,” the Texas senator insisted he had only said he was “open to reforms,” before abruptly telling reporters to “go away” and blocking a camera while entering an elevator.

The incident quickly fueled criticism among grassroots conservatives who say Washington Republicans must show stronger resolve to deliver on President Trump’s agenda.

Trump has made the SAVE America Act a central priority, even warning he will refuse to sign other legislation until Congress passes the bill protecting U.S. elections from illegal voting.

For millions of conservative voters, the question now is simple: will Senate Republicans stand with President Trump and secure America’s elections—or retreat when the pressure begins.
