South Carolina passes abortion ban

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster Thursday signed a law banning nearly all abortions in the state, and Planned Parenthood's women's health group followed suit, arguing the procedure was unconstitutional.

As one of the most restrictive prohibitions on abortion, the so-called "fetal heartbeat" law prohibits abortion after the fetus’s heartbeat has been detected, often within six weeks and before the woman realizes she is pregnant.

Abortion is one of the most contentious issues in the U.S. Religious beliefs are cited by opponents to declare them unethical and their defenders declare it an issue of women's health and privacy, among other arguments.
