Governor Gavin Newsom's trip to Washington D.C last week brought his policies into the spotlight. He met with officials in President Joe Biden's administration and Democratic lawmakers to discuss how the state can support their goals.

Senator Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut) and Newsom discussed California's strict gun laws, which Newsom credits with California's leadership in reducing gun violence. Murphy has also been a progressive advocate of such restrictions.

“Our kids, families and communities deserve streets free of gun violence and gun makers must be held accountable for their role in this crisis,” Newsom said in a statement. “Nearly every industry is held liable when people are hurt or killed by their products—guns should be no different.”

While California already protects abortion under its privacy laws, Newsom responded to the court's ruling by enshrining the right to abortion in the state constitution.

Next, Newsom met with the Chinese Minister of Ecology and Environment to “further CA’s climate partnership with China.”
