Caroline Kennedy, the new U.S. Ambassador to Australia, said Friday that the United States must expand its engagement in the Pacific region as China asserts itself.
As she arrived in Sydney International Airport to take up her new position, Kennedy spoke with reporters. A post that has been vacant for 18 months is due to be filled by her Monday when she formally presents her credentials.
“This is a critical area in the region, and I think the U.S. needs to do more. We’re putting our embassies back in and the Peace Corps is coming, and USAID is coming back and we’re coming back,” she said.
“We haven’t been there for a while, but I think that is all tremendously positive, and I think the U.S. and Australia working together will make a big impact.”
