During the Christmas parade in a small Wisconsin city WAUKESHA on Sunday, at least five people were killed and about forty were injured when a speeding SUV plowed into dozens of people, including children.
Law enforcement sources told CNN on Monday that authorities have found no link to terrorism, despite the investigation being in its early stages. While the investigation was in its early stages, the vehicle appeared to be fleeing another incident, According to CNN.
Thompson said Sunday night that an officer fired at the SUV to try to stop the suspect. There were no reports of bystanders being wounded by that gunfire and police didn't believe any shots were fired from the SUV. The investigation into the incident in Waukesha, about 20 miles (32 km) west of Milwaukee, is ongoing, and police have detained one person and recovered a sport utility vehicle. Police Chief Dan Thompson told the media.
Authorities warn that the death toll could change.
In an online video, a sport utility vehicle can be seen driving at speed behind the parade, running over a dozen people before crowds rush to help.
On social media, a video showed small groups of girls surrounding injured dancers with white pompoms scattered all over. A woman told Fox6 TV in Milwaukee that the SUV hit a group of little girls between 9 and 15 years old.
In later tweets, the local CBS affiliate showed what appeared to be the red SUV that was involved, parked in a driveway with its hood crumpled and front fender hanging off.
Waukesha Mayor Shawn Reilly called the incident a "horrible, senseless tragedy."
"My heart goes out to those injured as well as to their families," Reilly said. "My heart goes out to those who are witness to these events. My heart goes out to those who lost a loved one tonight."
In a tweet, Governor Tony Evers said he and his wife
"are praying for Waukesha tonight and all the kids, families, and community members affected by this senseless act. I'm grateful for the first responders and folks who acted quickly to help, and we are in contact with local partners as we await more information."
