As gas prices continue to rise, Rep. Earl Blumenauer urged President Joe Biden not to order a gas tax holiday. Other Democrats have rallied behind the proposal to improve their image at the same time.
During the past 12 months, the price of gas increased by 48 percent on average, according to the most recent Consumer Price Index produced by the U.S. Department of Labor.
Concerned about how the price increases will affect their chances in November, many Democrats have started urging Biden to order a gas tax holiday, in an effort to temporarily alleviate American consumers' suffering.
“While there is undoubtedly a need to provide American consumers relief from spiking costs, there is no guarantee a gas tax suspension would reduce prices at the pump or stem the broader inflation affecting the global economy, and it may only increase oil companies’ bottom lines,” Blumenauer wrote.
