Derbent, Dagestan — Archpriest Nikolai (Kotelnikov), a revered figure who served the Orthodox Christian community in Derbent for over four decades, was killed in a devastating terrorist attack on an Orthodox church. The attack, perpetrated by Islamist terrorists, is part of a series of coordinated assaults that have shaken the region.

The attack occurred in Russia's North Caucasus region of Dagestan, prompting authorities to declare three days of mourning. The assaults targeted not only the Orthodox church but also a synagogue and a police post, resulting in significant casualties. According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, the death toll has climbed to 19, including 15 police officers and several civilians.

The series of attacks began early Sunday morning, when gunmen opened fire on the Orthodox church where Archpriest Nikolai was conducting services. The attackers then moved to a nearby synagogue, causing further devastation before engaging in a violent confrontation with local law enforcement at a police post.

Archpriest Nikolai, known for his unwavering dedication to his congregation and his efforts to foster interfaith dialogue, had become a cornerstone of the community in Derbent. His death is a profound loss to the Orthodox Christian community and the broader region, where he was widely respected and loved.

The outpouring of grief and solidarity from across Russia has been overwhelming. Memorial services for the victims are being held nationwide, and communities are rallying together in a show of unity against the forces of terror.

As Dagestan mourns the loss of Archpriest Nikolai and the other victims, the resilience and determination of the region’s people remain unshaken. The legacy of Archpriest Nikolai’s service and dedication will continue to inspire and guide the community through these challenging times.
