The National Football League training camps open up this weekend with the rookies reporting first and the veterans joining them a few days thereafter.
With the beginning of training camps brings hope for all NFL Teams and their fans. Pro football is one of the few professional sports where teams annually finish last in their division, but rise up from the cellar the following season to win their Division, and as other teams in the past, have gone on to win the Super Bowl.
Last season, the 2025 New England Patriots were a perfect example, as they finished last in their division in 2024 , then went on to win their Division and the American Football Conference Championship before losing in Super Bowl LX to the Seattle Seahawks on February, 8 2026.
I love this phenomena and can’t wait to see how it plays out this season‼️
Each NFL team starts Camp with 90 players on their roster. Teams play 3 exhibition games, and this season the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals play 4 since they play in the annual Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio on August 6. Each team must cut their roster down to 53 active players by Sunday, August 30, by 6 pm EST.
Each team is allowed to keep 16 of the players on their 90 man roster, if they clear waivers, on their practice squad. These players DO NOT dress out on game day but practice with the team. Practice squad players can be elevated to the 53 man active roster anytime throughout the season by their team OR an opposing team if placed on that team’s 53 man active roster and given a contract. Teams can replace players on their practice squad with players released from other teams or with unsigned free agents . Players on the practice squad make $8000 per week. Claiming players off waivers closes on Monday, August 31st at 1pm EST
The Commanders’ training camp begins this Friday, July 24, for the rookies with the veterans arriving on Tuesday, July 28. The first full team practice will be Wednesday, July 29.
DAVE’S DIME
Each season, the NFL inducts players and coaches that have been retired for a minimum of 5 years or longer into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The honorees are selected by a 50 person selection committee. The annual Hall of Fame game, August 6th is the first preseason game of the season and during that game, they will honor the new inductees.
This season the inductees are quarterback Drew Brees, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, linebacker Luke Kuechly, Place kicker Adam Vinateri and Running back Roger Craig. The
induction ceremony will be held Saturday, August 8th in Canton Ohio. I had the pleasure of watching all of these great players during their hay day‼️
I hope you are as excited as I am that the 2027 National Football League Draft will be held in Washington DC, the Nation’s Capitol. The three day event begins on Thursday, April 29 through Saturday, May 1. The National Mall in front of the Capitol will be anchoring the draft Theater.
