A contentious televised debate in Miami on June 21 pitted the two top Democrats seeking to unseat Fl. Gov. Ron DeSantis this fall.

A few issues facing the Sunshine State led the opponents to pause their verbal sparring.

State agriculture commissioner Nikki Fried and U.S. House Rep. Charlie Crist concurred that emergency measures are needed to combat soaring home prices and insurance costs.

If elected, both said they would work to "ban assault weapons." And both said they would support the death penalty for the shooter on trial for killing 17 at a Florida high school in 2018.

During the debate—featuring many questions in Spanish and translated for the candidates—both said they favored comprehensive immigration reform. One million “undocumented workers” in agriculture are “essential to our economy,” Fried said.
