Two counties indicated they plan to defy the school mask mandate ban announced by new Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin on his first day in office.

Youngkin's executive order mandates that schools allow parents to select if and how long their students should wear masks.

Youngkin, a Republican, claimed that mask restrictions have shown to be "ineffective and impracticable," and that they have caused harm to children by impeding their capacity to talk and breathe.

He directed that schools, as well as school-based early childcare and educational programs, allow youngsters to remain unmasked if their parents so want. Parents are also not required to give a justification for their choice, according to the decree.
