In Superior, Wisconsin, a female police officer was ambushed during what should have been a routine traffic stop connected to a domestic case.

According to FOX 21, the officer identified a van tied to the suspect and initiated a stop. Before she could even step out of her cruiser, the suspect—a 28-year-old man from Solon Springs—sprang from the vehicle and opened fire on her. This was not hesitation. This was not fear. Despite being struck, the officer heroically returned fire. A second officer engaged as well, hitting the suspect—who then fled like a coward, crashing his van into a middle school. CBS News reports the man barricaded himself inside the school until finally surrendering hours later. He has since been identified as Dylan Charles-Edward Wallace.

Wallace now faces charges including attempted first-degree intentional homicide, strangulation and suffocation, criminal damage to property, and discharge of a firearm in a school zone—a laundry list that reflects the escalating boldness of violent offenders who no longer fear consequences.

The officer, thankfully, has been released from the hospital and is expected to recover.
