New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he does not support Israel as a Jewish state during an interview on ABC's This Week, stating that he cannot support any nation that gives preference to one religion over another. The remarks have renewed debate over his views on Israel and Middle East policy.
During the interview, ABC's Jonathan Karl asked Mamdani whether he supports Israel as a Jewish state. Mamdani responded that he supports "the state of Israel as a state with equal rights" but added that he could not support "any state that privileges one religion over another," saying the principle applies equally to Israel, Saudi Arabia, or any other nation.
The exchange quickly generated reactions from Jewish organizations and Israeli officials. Israel's Consul General in New York, Ofir Akunis, criticized Mamdani's comments, arguing that Israel's Declaration of Independence guarantees equal rights for all citizens regardless of religion. Other Jewish leaders also voiced concern that Mamdani's remarks could deepen divisions at a time of heightened tensions over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Mamdani has long advocated for Palestinian rights and has been critical of Israeli government policies. During the ABC interview, he reiterated his view that U.S. policy should prioritize equal rights and adherence to international law. He also acknowledged that debates over Israel played a significant role in recent Democratic primary campaigns in New York.
The interview is expected to remain a focal point as Mamdani's positions on foreign policy and antisemitism continue to receive scrutiny from political leaders, advocacy groups, and voters ahead of future elections.
