House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Sunday that forming a special committee to investigate the January 6 violation of the US Capitol is an "option."
Last month, Senate Republicans prevented the Senate from promoting a House-approved bill that would create a commission of inquiry on Jan. 6. Some Republicans felt that the commission, which would have subpoena power, was unnecessary because of the investigations the department was already conducting. Justice for any other agency was concerned if it was driven by politics. Pelosi said there are senators working to get the additional votes needed to pass the bill if it is resubmitted for consideration.
“A week ago, I was asked to give it another week. So I will see by Monday if the Senate believes that they could—those who are working the bipartisan way can get three more votes,” she said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Among the Republicans who opposed the commission, one of the main lines of thought was that the commission should allocate resources to investigate the riots that broke out in the United States in the summer of 2020, as well as the violation of the Capitol Building.
Pelosi has come under pressure over whether to announce a select committee if senators fail to reach an agreement on Monday.
