MAGA's Next Leader? Vance, Rubio, Trump Jr., and DeSantis in New 2028 Poll

Vice President JD Vance is emerging as the clear frontrunner in the race to inherit President Trump's political movement, according to a new Pollsmax Republican primary average that places Vance at 39.3% support, a commanding 20.3-point lead over his nearest competitor.

The polling average shows:

  • JD Vance — 39.3%

  • Marco Rubio — 19.0%

  • Donald Trump Jr. — 15.2%

  • Ron DeSantis — 8.1%

  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — 4.2%

The numbers suggest that Republican voters increasingly view Vance as the leading heir to the America First movement. While the 2028 nomination battle remains years away, Vance's position as Vice President has given him unmatched visibility among conservative voters.

Recent national reporting has highlighted Vance and Rubio as the two most prominent potential successors to President Trump, with both men frequently mentioned in discussions about the future of the Republican Party. Vance recently stated that he will wait until after the 2026 midterm elections before making any decision about a presidential campaign.

The battle for second place is becoming increasingly competitive. Rubio's elevated foreign policy role has boosted his national profile, while Trump Jr. continues to enjoy strong support from grassroots MAGA activists who view him as a direct extension of the Trump political brand. Reports indicate President Trump has publicly praised both Rubio and Vance while declining to endorse a 2028 successor.

For Governor DeSantis, the poll is a reminder that rebuilding momentum after the 2024 cycle remains a challenge. Meanwhile, Kennedy's presence in a Republican primary survey reflects the unusual political realignment that has occurred during the Trump era.

The larger story may be what the numbers reveal about the Republican electorate. Nearly a decade after President Trump reshaped the GOP, the party's voters appear to be searching for a candidate who can continue the America First agenda while adapting it for a post-Trump political era.

At the moment, that candidate appears to be JD Vance.

Whether the Vice President can maintain a 20-point advantage through the midterms, a possible economic slowdown, foreign policy challenges, and an expected flood of Republican contenders remains to be seen. But if today's numbers hold, the road to the 2028 Republican nomination may run through the Vice President's office.

The MAGA succession battle has begun—and JD Vance currently holds a commanding lead.
