Joining NATO is the formal intent of Finland and Sweden

After the Russia-Ukraine conflict spurred the two countries to step out of the neutrality they have held since the Cold War, Finland and Sweden formally applied to join NATO in Brussels on Wednesday.

In a statement published by the Associated Press on Wednesday, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called it a "historic moment" and warmly welcomed the two countries into the world's biggest military alliance, which is being considered to be one of the biggest changes to Europe's security architecture in decades.
