The British government has dismissed Conservative legislators' calls to reduce green levies and other taxes to help British households cope with rising energy costs.
In April, households may expect a significant hike in energy costs when suppliers raise prices after the cost of gas in wholesale markets increased by more than 500% in less than a year.
In a letter published in The Sunday Telegraph, the lawmakers from both the House of Commons and the House of Lords argued that the cost of the UK government’s climate policy was partly to blame for the rising energy costs.
The letter encouraged the government to eliminate environmental taxes on home energy, which it claims account for 23% of electricity costs, as well as to lower VAT on energy bills, which would result in a 5% drop in energy prices.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s official spokesman said, “The exposure to volatile global gas prices underscores the importance of our plan to build a strong, home-grown renewable energy sector to further reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.”
