In her announcement on Saturday, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said that if former President Donald Trump becomes the GOP presidential nominee in 2024, she will leave the party. She will also campaign for Democrats to prevent GOP candidate Kari Lake from winning the Arizona gubernatorial election.
At The Texas Tribune festival in Austin, Cheney, who lost the Republican primary in August to Trump-backed challenger Harriet Hageman, made the comments. During the Arizona primary election in August, Lake, a former television anchor who is backed by Trump, won the Republican nomination. When she wins the gubernatorial election, Lake has pledged to improve election security after contending that fraud will occur in the 2020 election.
In response to a question from Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith, Cheney simply responded: "Yes."
As one of the loudest critics of the former president in the Republican Party, Cheney has now stated that if he wins the presidential nomination in 2024, she will not remain a Republican.
“I’m going to make sure Donald Trump, I’m going to do everything I can to make sure he is not the nominee. And if he is the nominee, I won’t be a Republican,” Cheney said.
