'Heavy casualties' in Ukraine for Russia, says UK's Johnson

During a surprise visit to Kyiv on Friday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said "all the evidence" points to the Russian invasion of Ukraine resulting in heavy casualties.

In addition, Johnson pledged to continue military aid and provide training on new military equipment. The equipment was not mentioned.

“We are with you to give you the strategic endurance that you will need,” he said.

Ukraine was recommended for membership by the European Union's executive arm on Friday, a symbolic boost for a country facing a Russian invasion that has killed civilians, razed cities and threatened its very existence.

The possibility of membership in a union created to safeguard peace on the continent and serve as a model for the rule of law and prosperity fulfils a wish of Zelenskyy and his Western-looking citizens.
