Extensions may be preferable to rushing a return on Tax Day

Writer: Capitol TimesCapitol Times

The IRS anticipates receiving tens of millions of last-minute tax returns electronically and via paper forms on Tax Day, Monday, which is the federal deadline for filing and paying individual tax returns.

During this tax season, the IRS has received more than 103 million returns. As of April 8, it has issued more than 63 million refunds worth more than $204 billion.

More than 169 million people filed income tax returns by the end of last year. Nearly 40 percent of this year's taxpayers still have not submitted their documents by Monday, and many are running out of time.

Those who haven't filed their taxes by now might want to consider requesting an extension, said Nina Tross, executive director of the National Society of Tax Professionals.
