Bolstering war efforts, President Zelenskyy signs a law to seize and sell Russian assets

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, signed a law on May 23 allowing the country to seize and sell the assets of anyone who supports Russian President Vladimir Putin's military invasion of Ukraine.

According to NPR, the law focuses on Russian-owned assets and property in Ukraine, especially those own by Russian citizens already subject to asset blocking by the Ukrainian government, and will bolster Ukraine's war efforts.

In addition, as part of the law, defendants who do not attend court or are not represented in court will not result in the court taking as long to consider their claim.

A separate provision targets those who helped set up elections or referendums in Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine or assisted in the establishment of pro-Russian separatist states there.

There are two pro-Russian separatist states in eastern Ukraine -- the Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic -- which are recognized as independent nations by Russia but are regarded as terrorist state-occupied territories by Ukrainian forces.
