President Joe Biden on Thursday pledged to pressure China to comply with international rules, criticized his Republican opponents, and defended his policy of providing sanctuary to children crossing the US border from Mexico in his first solo press conference since taking office.

Biden appeared in front of reporters for more than an hour, appeared well prepared, reading written articles from time to time and answering questions calmly, in stark contrast to the raucous and combative press conferences of his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump.

Amid the worst relations between the United States and China in decades, Biden compared Chinese President Xi Jinping to Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing them as supporters of autocracy.
