Rep. Barry Moore, the Trump-backed Senate candidate from Alabama, is sounding the alarm after Senate Democrats moved to block the SAVE America Act — a bill designed to require proof of U.S. citizenship to vote in federal elections.
In an interview with Breitbart News, Moore accused Democrats of opposing the measure because, in his words, they “need outsiders to maintain their power.”
The legislation, strongly supported by Donald Trump, recently passed the Republican-led House. The measure would require voters to present documentary proof of citizenship — such as a passport or birth certificate — when registering to vote.
Backers say the goal is straightforward: protect election integrity and restore confidence in America’s voting system.
Sen. Mike Lee, a leading sponsor in the Senate, dismissed Democratic criticism as a “paranoid fantasy,” arguing that proof-of-citizenship requirements are normal in many areas of daily life.
Despite House passage, the bill faces steep resistance in the Senate. Democrats have largely united against it, warning it could suppress voting, and the measure lacks the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster.
Even some Republicans have expressed concerns about federal overreach and logistical challenges for states.
Still, Moore framed the battle in stark terms, portraying it as part of a larger struggle between what he called the “America First movement” and a political establishment unwilling to tighten voting rules.
As the Senate standoff continues, President Trump has signaled he may pursue executive action if Congress fails to act, underscoring the stakes ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Supporters argue the fight reflects a fundamental question about sovereignty and citizenship: who decides America’s future — its citizens or an increasingly contested electoral system.
