For decades, America's political establishment has struggled to speak honestly about the threat posed by radical Islamist extremism. Too often, leaders have feared controversy more than they feared the consequences of silence.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio's warning cuts through that political correctness. The danger is not ordinary Muslims living peacefully in America or around the world. The danger comes from radical Islamist movements that openly embrace terrorism, political violence, and ideological expansion.
The historical record is undeniable. From the September 11 attacks to Orlando, Fort Hood, Pensacola, ISIS-inspired attacks in Europe, and countless terrorist plots disrupted by intelligence agencies, radical Islamist networks have repeatedly demonstrated their willingness to use violence against civilians in pursuit of political and religious objectives.
America's enemies do not hide their intentions. Extremist organizations have long declared the United States, Israel, and Western democracies to be obstacles to their vision of global domination. Their goal is not coexistence. Their goal is victory.
Recognizing this threat is not hatred. It is realism.
The overwhelming majority of Muslims reject terrorism and live peacefully under democratic governments. In fact, many Muslims have themselves been victims of Islamist extremism. Nations across the Middle East have fought brutal battles against terrorist organizations that threatened their own people and governments.
America must therefore distinguish between peaceful Muslim communities and the extremists who seek to exploit religion as a weapon.
National security requires strong borders, aggressive counterterrorism operations, close cooperation with allies, and unwavering support for intelligence agencies tasked with preventing attacks before they occur. Weakness invites aggression. Strength preserves peace.
The lesson of the twenty-first century is simple: ignoring extremist ideology does not make it disappear. The first step toward defeating a threat is acknowledging that it exists.
America should remain vigilant, confident, and committed to defending freedom against those who seek to destroy it.
