With the new Australian PM, the French president hopes to rebuild trust

President Emmanuel Macron has bid a fond farewell to the outgoing Australian prime minister and welcomed Anthony Albanese as the new leader.

The French president and Australian Prime Minister discussed the situation in Ukraine and the response to a potential global food crisis. They also discussed their historical ties. Macron thanked Australia for its contribution during World War I.

He told the newly elected Australian prime minister that he had spoken with him, according to a statement issued by the Élysée Palace.

“After noting the deep breach of trust that followed former Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s decision to terminate the Future Submarine Programme, the head of state and the Australian prime minister agreed to rebuild a bilateral relationship based on trust and respect to jointly overcome global challenges, foremost among which is the climate emergency, and the strategic challenges in the Indo-Pacific,” the statement said on May 26.

Identifying strategic cooperation between our two countries in order to improve our resilience and contribute to regional peace and security will be included in a roadmap to structure this new bilateral agenda."
