United Nations Nuclear agreement is blocked by Russia

Writer: Capitol TimesCapitol Times

During a four-week review of the U.N. Treaty considered a cornerstone of nuclear disarmament, Russia blocked agreement on the final document late Friday. The Russian military seized Europe's largest nuclear plant shortly after the invasion of Ukraine, raising concerns about nuclear accidents.

It is unfortunate that there is no consensus on the 50-year-old Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, according to Igor Vishnevetsky, deputy director of the Nonproliferation and Arms Control Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The document needed approval by all 191 countries that are parties to the treaty aimed at curbing the spread of nuclear weapons and ultimately achieving a world without them.

President of the conference, Ambassador Gustavo Zlauvinen, said the final draft reflected his best efforts to address divergent views and the expectations of all parties.
