Amid escalating tensions in the South China Sea, a U.S. Navy Commander has affirmed that the actions of a U.S. warship over the weekend were in strict compliance with international law. The incident, which drew the ire of the Chinese military, saw the USS Hopper carrying out what the U.S. Navy described as a routine operation near the Paracel Islands.
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Southern Theatre Command had asserted that its naval and air forces were deployed to monitor and caution the U.S. destroyer. The incident has been portrayed by China's military as evidence of the United States being a 'security risk creator' in the region.
This recent clash follows allegations made by Beijing against Manila, accusing the Philippines of involving foreign forces in patrolling the South China Sea, notably referring to joint patrols conducted by the Philippines and the U.S. militaries. Additionally, joint sea and air patrols commenced between the Philippines and Australia over the weekend, further exacerbating tensions in the region.
The South China Sea has long been a hotbed of contention, with various nations, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei, laying claim to different parts of the area. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has aggressively pursued its territorial expansion agenda, constructing artificial islands as military outposts and pressuring neighboring nations to cede their rights and territories.
At the core of the conflict lies the CCP's insistence on historical claims over vast expanses of the South China Sea, which clashes with the claims of several other nations in the region. This dispute is of immense global significance, given that the South China Sea serves as a crucial conduit for more than $3.3 trillion in annual global maritime trade.
In response to the recent incident, the Commander of the U.S. 7th Fleet Public Affairs, in a statement from the Indo-Pacific Command, clarified that the USS Hopper's operations were intended to uphold navigational rights and freedoms, consistent with international law. The statement emphasized the importance of challenging restrictions on innocent passage imposed by the People's Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan, and Vietnam.
The U.S. asserted that the freedom of navigation operation (FONOP) carried out by the USS Hopper was aimed at upholding the rights, freedoms, and lawful uses of the sea, in accordance with recognized international norms. The operation concluded with the USS Hopper exiting the contested area and continuing its activities in the South China Sea.
As tensions persist in the South China Sea, this incident underscores the ongoing struggle between nations in the region to assert their territorial claims while adhering to international legal frameworks governing maritime navigation and sovereignty.
