U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday that lawmakers will form an external and independent committee to review "facts and causes" related to the January 6 deadly attack on the US Capitol by supporters of President Trump.

Pelosi said in a letter to lawmakers that the commission would build on a similar commission that was held after the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and the Pentagon. Pelosi said the commission would also look into "the facts and causes of the readiness and response of the US Capitol Police and other federal, state and local law enforcement authorities."

I tasked retired US Army Lieutenant General Russel Honoré to assess the security needs of the Capitol building after the attack. Based on his preliminary findings, he said Congress should allocate additional funds "to ensure the safety of the members and the security of the Capitol."
