This Is Why America First Democrats Like Trump's Speech Last Night

Last night in Dallas, President Trump opened the first-ever Republican midterm convention with a keynote address, and scattered across living rooms in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and beyond, an unusual audience was watching: registered Democrats who found themselves nodding along. To understand why, you have to understand who these people are, because they never left the Democratic Party. By their telling, the party left the working people it was built to serve. Watching last night's speech must have felt like hearing leaders finally talk about priorities that used to be bipartisan common sense, fair trade, healthy kids, faith, and standing up for themselves.

The Labor Democrat Who Sees Old Truths Come Back

Consider the labor Democrat. The one with a grandfather who organized and a father who paid dues. That grandfather's generation understood something the modern party forgot: you cannot have a middle class if you hollow out the factories that built it. It was Democrats who protected American industry through most of the twentieth century. Then came the "free trade" orthodoxy, (Clinton and the Democrats approved NAFTA) and entire towns across the Rust Belt and south turned into museum exhibits of the middle class.

When Trump put tariffs back on the table and made protecting American workers a governing philosophy instead of a negotiation tactic, a Democrat like this must have felt something strange: vindication. Such a voter can still believe in unions, the minimum wage, and collective bargaining, but those things mean little if there's no plant left to bargain in. On trade, the America First position isn't heresy for a labor Democrat. It's a homecoming.

The MAHA Democrat Who Applauded RFK Jr. at HHS

Then there's the MAHA Democrat, the one who cares deeply about health. For years, this Democrat watched children's chronic disease rates climb while anyone who asked basic questions was mocked. Then Trump did something no Democratic administration had the nerve to do: he elevated Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a lifelong Democrat from the most famous Democratic family in American history, to run Health and Human Services, with a mandate to Make America Healthy Again.

Whatever one thinks of RFK Jr. on any given issue, the principle behind the appointment is one the Democratic Party used to champion: the food supply, the pharmaceutical industry, and public health agencies should answer to the people, not to the industries they regulate.

Fewer chemicals in school lunches, more transparency in vaccine and drug

approvals. A Democrat watching last night who shares those instincts must have thought: if

caring about that makes someone MAGA, then the word just means "uncomfortable

questions are allowed now."

The Spiritual Democrat Who Isn't an Atheist Marxist

Now consider the deepest break of all, the spiritual Democrat. A person of faith, like so

many Democrats of another era: church going African American congregations, Catholic

factory workers, Baptist grandmothers, Mormons, those who practice Judaism, Buddhism,

Taoism, Hinduism, Falun Dafa, and Muslims who are not indoctrinated by Atheist Marxism.

Somewhere along the way, the loudest voices in democratic politics adopted a worldview

that treats religion as superstition, faith as oppression, and believers as enemies of

progress. Call it what it is: an Atheist Marxist that despises the very institutions churches,

families, communities, that actually hold struggling neighborhoods together.

President Trump defends the public place of faith in American life, and he drew believers of

every background to him precisely because they were tired of being sneered at. A spiritual

Democrat watching that speech must have felt the sting of recognition: reverence for life,

for family, for conscience, these are not right-wing values. They are old Democratic values

wearing new clothes. They are American values.

The Humanitarian Capitalist Tired of Economic Sins in Charity

And finally, the wound that stings most for the humanitarian capitalist Democrat, the one

who believes in generosity. America has every right to be proud of its giving and its always

lead by American and it capitalist economy: it feeds, funds, rescues, and rebuilds more of

the world than any nation in history, mostly funded by the wealth that only free-market

capitalism could generate. That charity is an achievement, but it’s also become Sins in

Charity.

Such a Democrat is tired, tired of watching American economic investment and aid flow to

countries and movements whose intellectual class, trained in Atheist Marxism, then

teaches their young people that America is the source of all their suffering and state

capitalism is the problem and fund chaos against America. Gratitude is not submission,

and criticism is not arson. The problem is not honest critique; a true friend tells hard truths.

The problem is, an entire indoctrinated worldview of Atheist Marxism that takes American

money with one hand while denouncing the system and the country that produced it.

That is where the America First message lands hardest for such voters: generosity should

begin to look like self-respect. Charity is not owed forever to those who spit at it.

Still Democrats — But America First

Watching last night, none of these voters were converts. They were Democrats who never

moved, watching a Republican convention articulate fair trade for workers, healthy

children, faith respected, and generosity with dignity. Those were the Democratic Party's

issues before they became Trumps coalitions. And judging by the lineup in Dallas, including

the remarkable moment when Democratic Senator John Fetterman appeared in a surprise

video at a GOP convention, of all places, these viewers are not alone in asking whom the

party thinks it's serving anymore.

Until the Democratic Party remembers that its heart was labor, family, faith, and

community, the America First tent is going to keep filling up with people who look a lot like

them: a Democrat, a union believer, a MAHA parent, a person of faith, and yes, America

First.

Spiritual, MAGA, MAHA, America First Democrat. My Walking Trade show, as I call it,
