Writer: Capitol TimesCapitol Times

50,000 people have been evacuated from Cuba's western tip as Hurricane Ian grew to a Category 3 storm early Tuesday and moved toward Florida's west coast.

The hurricane hit Cuba's Pinar del Rio province early Tuesday, where officials setup 55 shelters, dispatched emergency personnel and sprayed crops to protect them. According to the National Hurricane Center, a storm surge of 14 feet (4.3 meters) is possible on the island's west coast.

As soon as Wednesday, Ian is expected to arrive as a Category 4 storm with 140 mph (225 km/h) top winds in Florida after passing over Cuba.
