The chief EU negotiator on Brexit told envoys from member states on Wednesday that negotiations on a trade agreement with Britain had reached a "watershed moment", urging him not to rush to reach an unsatisfactory agreement.

"He said the next few days will be crucial", said a senior EU diplomat who took part in the briefing, just four weeks before the deadline for an agreement to avoid what would be a financial divorce.

The diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Barnier had not set a date for closing the deal, but that it would take time for all 27 member states and the European Parliament before December 31.
