The Texas Senate passed a comprehensive election review bill on May 30, which has been criticized by prominent Democrats for provisions that they say expand restrictions and penalties.

The legislation was largely partisan, according to local media, after a debate that continued until the morning of May 30. The House of Representatives had midnight May 30 to approve the proposal.

This measure will give election observers more power by giving them more access to electoral districts while imposing new sanctions against election officials who restrict the movements of election observers. The proposal would also allow the judge to nullify the election result when the number of fraudulent votes could alter the result.

Officials who send ballot postal papers to people who did not request them under the law can also be prosecuted.

Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott had previously indicated that he supported such electoral measures.
