Tesla Recalls Nearly 3 Million EVs in China Over Door-Handle Safety Risks

Tesla is recalling nearly 3 million electric vehicles in China over concerns that occupants may have difficulty locating or operating emergency mechanical door releases after a serious crash, putting fresh scrutiny on one of the design features most closely associated with modern electric vehicles.


China’s State Administration for Market Regulation said Tesla filed recall plans covering **2,975,910 vehicles**, including China-made and imported Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles. The action is part of a broader safety campaign involving several electric-vehicle manufacturers as Chinese regulators move aggressively to address the risks associated with electronically controlled and concealed door systems.


The central concern is what happens when an EV loses electrical power following a major collision. Tesla vehicles normally rely heavily on electronic door controls, while mechanical emergency releases are intended to provide an alternative if the electrical system fails. Chinese regulators said some of those emergency releases can be difficult to identify because they closely match the surrounding interior trim.


In an extreme accident where the vehicle’s low-voltage electrical system stops functioning, regulators warned that the design could make it harder for occupants to quickly open the doors and escape. It could also complicate efforts by rescuers attempting to enter the vehicle from outside.


Tesla’s remedy will not involve a sweeping replacement of the door hardware. Instead, the company will add warning labels identifying emergency mechanical releases where needed and deploy an over-the-air software update designed to change how the windows respond following a collision. The software will introduce a strategy intended to lower the windows after an accident, reducing the potential danger if electrically operated doors cannot function normally.


The door-related recall is scheduled to begin September 25 and covers roughly 973,000 domestically produced Model 3 vehicles, nearly 1.96 million China-made Model Y vehicles, approximately 35,600 imported Model 3s, more than 8,300 imported Model X vehicles and just over 2,100 imported Model S vehicles, according to the Chinese regulator.


The recall represents another major challenge for an automotive industry that has increasingly favored sleek, flush-mounted electronic door handles as manufacturers push futuristic styling, improved aerodynamics and greater software integration.


Tesla helped popularize the minimalist design, but the technology has attracted growing regulatory attention internationally because electronic systems can become difficult or impossible to operate after certain crashes or electrical failures.


The issue is not limited to China. In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has also been examining vehicle-door safety and the reliability and accessibility of manual emergency releases. TechCrunch reported in July that NHTSA was moving toward potential new requirements aimed at ensuring drivers and passengers can safely exit vehicles when electronic systems stop working.


The U.S. discussion followed reports involving Tesla vehicles in which people allegedly had difficulty opening doors following crashes. Although Tesla vehicles include manual emergency releases, concerns have focused on whether passengers can locate and operate them quickly enough in a high-stress emergency, particularly if they are unfamiliar with the vehicle.


China has already moved further. New regulations scheduled to take effect **January 1, 2027** will require mechanical release capability for vehicle doors and effectively eliminate purely electronic concealed-door-handle configurations on new models. The Wall Street Journal and TechCrunch previously reported that the rules were introduced amid mounting concerns about occupants becoming trapped when electronic systems fail.


Tesla is also not alone in facing China’s latest safety campaign. Xiaomi, Leapmotor, Geely-related brands, XPeng and other manufacturers are recalling vehicles over similar concerns involving emergency door-release systems. The Associated Press reported that the broader action affects more than 4 million vehicles across multiple manufacturers.


For Tesla, the episode illustrates a wider tension at the heart of the software-defined automobile. Features that make vehicles cleaner, more aerodynamic and technologically sophisticated can introduce new failure modes when critical functions depend on electricity, sensors or software.


That tension is becoming increasingly important as automobiles evolve into connected computing platforms. Over-the-air updates can now address problems that once required dealership visits, allowing companies such as Tesla to alter vehicle behavior remotely. But regulators are increasingly signaling that software sophistication cannot replace straightforward mechanical safeguards when passenger escape and emergency access are at stake.


The recall comes as Tesla continues competing intensely in China, the world’s largest electric-vehicle market, where domestic manufacturers have rapidly expanded their technological capabilities and placed mounting competitive pressure on foreign brands.


Tesla’s ability to resolve much of the problem through software highlights one of the advantages of modern connected vehicles. At the same time, the sheer scale of the recall — nearly 3 million Teslas in a single market — underscores how quickly a design philosophy can become a regulatory problem once that technology is deployed across millions of vehicles.


For the broader AI and technology sector, the lesson extends beyond automobiles. As physical products become increasingly controlled by software, regulators are focusing not only on what technology can do when everything works correctly, but also on what happens when power, electronics or automated systems fail.


In the next generation of transportation technology, innovation may increasingly be judged by a simpler standard: whether the most basic safety functions still work when the advanced technology does not.
