Tesla has been chastised for constructing a new showroom in Xinjiang, China's far western region, where the communist dictatorship has imprisoned over one million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities.
Tesla's first showroom in Xinjiang opened on December 31 in Urumqi, the region's capital city, according to a post on the company's official Weibo account.
"We meet in Xinjiang on the last day of 2021," the American electric manufacturer stated on the Twitter-like website. "Let's embark on an all-electric trip in Xinjiang in 2022!" The tweet includes photos from the inauguration event, including individuals holding placards that read "Tesla [love] Xinjiang."
Telsa is the latest Western company under pressure to take a stand on Xinjiang, having constructed its first facility outside of the US near Shanghai in 2019. The ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has targeted clothing and other brands that have expressed concern about forced labor in Xinjiang, with Walmart and Intel being the most recent targets.
More than a million people and other Muslim minorities have been imprisoned in Xinjiang internment camps, where they have been subjected to forced sterilization, torture, political indoctrination, and forced labor, according to researchers. Beijing's actions have been described as genocide by the United States and other Western democracies.
