Senior Texas network operator executives resign after widespread blackouts

Five members of the Texas Electrical Reliability Council (ERCOT), a Texas power grid operator, resigned Tuesday after the state's power system failed during a fatal winter storm, leaving more than 4 million customers without electricity in freezing temperatures.

The five board members live outside of Texas. Their resignations go into effect on Wednesday, just a day before lawmakers in Texas are expected to question network managers and energy officials about the failures during hearings at the state Capitol.

ERCOT Chairman Sally Talberg, Vice President Peter Cramton, and Board Members Terry Bulger and Raymond Hepper, wrote in a joint letter to other ERCOT board members: “We want to acknowledge the pain and suffering of Texas over the past week. Our hearts are with all Texas residents who have had to live. Without electricity, heat, and water during cold temperatures and continue to face the tragic consequences of this emergency. "
