Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) Said in a statement that he wants to make the "long-standing marijuana reform issue a priority for Congress."

Democratic lawmakers cited the harm that people of color, veterans, and low-income citizens suffered as a result of the current hemp policy.

Not everyone has been arrested. "This is not a war on drugs, it is a war against people, against certain people," Booker said. "Veterans are being disproportionately arrested for possession of marijuana."

Previous marijuana legislation, known as the MORE Act, was passed by the House of Representatives in December 2020. Five Republican representatives, including Rep. Matt Gates (R-Florida) voted in favor of the legislation. They indicated the potential progress of the healthcare sector and the reduction of incarceration cases.
