WASHINGTON, D.C. — June 4, 2026
As Senate Republicans prepare for a marathon vote-a-rama on President Donald Trump's $70 billion immigration enforcement package, Democrats are once again attempting to derail one of the administration's most important national security priorities. The legislation would provide three years of funding for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol, strengthening America's ability to secure the border and enforce immigration law.
At the center of the controversy is President Trump's proposed $1.8 billion "anti-weaponization" fund, designed to address concerns about political targeting and government abuse. Democrats have labeled the proposal a "slush fund" and are demanding its elimination, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer seeks to force Republicans into politically charged votes ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
The Trump administration has already signaled that the fund will not move forward after opposition from several Senate Republicans. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche informed lawmakers this week that the Justice Department is abandoning the proposal.
Despite internal disagreements over the fund, Republicans remain focused on advancing the $70 billion immigration package. The Senate voted 53-46 to begin debate on the legislation, underscoring the GOP's commitment to border security while Democrats continue to prioritize political attacks over addressing the nation's immigration crisis.
With illegal immigration remaining a top concern for American voters, Thursday's votes will determine whether Congress delivers the resources needed for enforcement or allows partisan battles to obstruct President Trump's immigration agenda.
