On Thursday, the Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee approved President Donald Trump's nomination of Amy Coney Barrett for a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court despite a Democratic boycott, paving the way for the final vote. The Senate scheduled for Monday.
By a 12-0 majority, the committee agreed to Barrett with all Republicans voting yes and 10 committee Democrats boycotted the meeting after describing the confirmation process as a sham. With President Trump's fellow Republicans gaining a 53-47 majority in the Senate, Barrett's confirmation seems certain.
“The Senate majority is conducting the most rushed, the most partisan and the least legitimate process in the long history of Supreme Court nominations,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer told reporters after the vote.
Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham said the Democratic boycott was “their choice.”
“It will be my choice to vote the nominee out of committee. We’re not going to allow them to take over the committee,” Graham said.
