Senate hearing opens for Supreme Court pick Amy Coney Barrett

The Senate Judiciary Committee opened its four-day confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett on Monday as the committee chair predicted it would be a "long and controversial week" and Democrats denounced the Republican campaign to pass it before November. 3.

Democrats are vehemently opposed to Barrett, whose confirmation would give the court a conservative 6-3 majority that could lead to rulings abolishing abortion rights, expanding religious and gun rights, and upholding voting restrictions that Republicans support, among other issues.

Republicans have a 53-47 Senate majority so Barrett’s confirmation seems almost certain, as Graham acknowledged.
