Former congressman Jim Renacci tapped the Air Force veteran last December to run with him in the May 3 GOP primary against Gov. Mike DeWine (R) and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted (R).

After he declined an offer from Ron Hood, another candidate seeking to replace DeWine, Knopp made this decision.

From 2013 to 2021, Hood served in the Ohio House of Representatives. He ran for office in the 15th Congressional District last year, but he finished a distant third behind Trump-backed Mike Carey.

Knopp gained acclaim for serving as the producer of films like “Unplanned,” “I Can Only Imagine” and “The Trump I Know.” He said he was approached by Hood and Candice Keller, who is also a former Ohio state representative, about “either running for governor or joining the ticket as lieutenant governor.”
