At an NFC Championship game at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Jan 30, several California officials were photographed without masks.

In addition to retired NBA legend Magic Johnson posing maskless for a photo with governor Gavin Newsom, LA mayor Eric Garcetti, and San Francisco Mayor London Breed, the Rams won their place in Superbowl LVI after beating the 49ers 20-17.

The Los Angeles County Health Department requires masks at outdoor and indoor mega-events involving more than 5,000 people, regardless of whether they are vaccinated unless they are actively eating and drinking.

On Jan. 31, Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger called for “re-evaluation” of the county's mask policy, adding that the policy "doesn't matter when it isn't implemented consistently."

The Mayor of Los Angeles, the Mayor of San Francisco, and the Governor, according to Desmond, were not exempt from the rules for SoFi Stadium as set by health officials in California.
