McMaster Appoints Darline Graham Nordone to Senate, Honoring Lindsey Graham’s America First Legacy

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the passing of Sen. Lindsey Graham, ensuring South Carolina maintains Republican representation while the state prepares for a special election later this year. Nordone will serve until Jan. 3, 2027, with a Republican primary scheduled for August to choose the party’s nominee for the next full term.


During the announcement in Columbia, McMaster called Graham an "irreplaceable" leader and said it was both his duty and honor to ask Graham’s sister to complete the remainder of his Senate service. President Donald Trump publicly urged the governor to make the appointment, describing Nordone as the ideal choice to honor her brother’s legacy and lifelong devotion to South Carolina and America.


Fighting back emotion, Nordone praised her brother as "the most amazing person" who worked tirelessly for South Carolina, the nation, and the world. Their bond was forged through hardship after the deaths of their parents, when a young Lindsey Graham became her legal guardian and raised her as his own. That deeply personal history has become central to the transition now unfolding in the Senate.


Nordone has not announced whether she will seek election to a full Senate term. For now, Republicans will look to preserve Graham’s legislative priorities while South Carolina voters prepare to choose their next senator.
