Maryland shooting leaves 3 dead, trooper wounded

Three people were killed and a state trooper was wounded in a shootout Thursday at a manufacturing business in rural western Maryland, authorities said.

Three people were found dead at Columbia Machine Inc. in Smithsburg, and a fourth victim was critically injured, according to a press release from the Washington County Sheriff's Office. In a news release, Maryland State Police said that the suspect fled in a car and was tracked down.

A sheriff's office report said a suspect and a trooper were injured in a gunfight. The injured individuals are receiving medical treatment. A governor briefed on the incident said that one officer returned fire, wounding the suspect after he opened fire on troopers.

As Hogan told reporters, the suspect opened fire and struck the state trooper in the shoulder. He was then shot himself by the trooper.
