January 6 Committee: Pence's life was put in danger by Donald Trump on January 6

At its third hearing, the House January 6 Committee focused on President Donald Trump's claims that Vice President Mike Pence was "in danger" during the inauguration, particularly focusing on behind-the-scenes debates over whether to halt the certification of candidates from contested states under an ambiguous clause of the second amendment.

As part of its investigation, the commission presented evidence that illustrates what happened behind the scenes in the lead-up to the Capitol breach in order to prove that President Trump was responsible for escalating violence at the Capitol and endangering Pence's life.

In the end, Pence sided with those rejecting Trump’s claim—a decision he explained in a February interview with The Federalist Society.

“I heard this week that President Trump said I had the right to overturn the election. President Trump is wrong,” Pence said in February.

On Jan. 6, 2021, a commission was set up to investigate the violence that took place, and the commission presented new evidence showing that Pence was in greater danger than previously thought because of Trump's electoral certification claim.

The key issue presented during the third day of hearings revolved around the efforts of Trump and some of his allies to have Pence stop the certification of electoral votes until claims of widespread election fraud had been adjudicated.
