An Israel-bound Flydubai passenger jet was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after a violent confrontation erupted inside the cockpit, sending the aircraft into a rapid descent and prompting an immediate regional security response.

Flydubai Flight FZ1073 was traveling from Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates to Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv when the emergency unfolded.

The airline confirmed that an altercation occurred on the flight deck and said crew members traveling aboard the aircraft were able to secure the plane before diverting it safely to Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. All passengers and crew were accounted for following the landing.

The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remained under investigation Wednesday, and Flydubai cautioned against speculation about the motive.

Israeli officials, however, described a far more serious sequence of events.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said one of the pilots stabbed the other and then apparently attempted to bring down the aircraft. According to Netanyahu, a passenger and a crew member managed to enter the cockpit and subdue the alleged attacker, while another qualified crew member helped regain control of the jet.

The prime minister praised those who intervened, saying their actions prevented what could have become a major aviation disaster.

Aircraft Plunges During Cockpit Crisis

Flight-tracking information illustrated the severity of the emergency.

After flying for roughly two and a half hours, the aircraft suddenly lost thousands of feet of altitude. Associated Press reporting based on Flightradar24 data showed the jet dropping from approximately 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in about a minute before circling near the Jordanian border and eventually heading toward Saudi Arabia.

Other tracking reports recorded a similarly dramatic descent.

The aircraft transmitted a general emergency signal and later a code indicating possible unlawful interference, immediately raising fears that a hijacking might be underway.

Israel responded by scrambling military aircraft as officials attempted to determine what was happening aboard the passenger jet.

Those fears eased once authorities received information indicating that the aircraft had been brought back under control.

The plane ultimately landed safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk.

Passengers Describe Chaotic Scene

Accounts emerging from passengers and their relatives painted a frightening picture of the minutes surrounding the incident.

Passengers reported hearing shouting near the front of the aircraft before the jet suddenly began losing altitude. Video reviewed by The Associated Press showed wounded men inside the aircraft and passengers providing medical assistance while others guarded the cockpit area.

Saudi authorities provided medical assistance after the aircraft landed.

Officials at the airport said both the captain and first officer suffered injuries and received hospital treatment. The precise sequence of the confrontation and the extent of their injuries were still being established Wednesday.

Netanyahu said he personally spoke with one of the Israeli passengers involved in the incident. According to the prime minister's account, the passenger and a crew member entered the cockpit during the crisis and helped overpower the pilot accused of carrying out the attack.

Motive Remains Under Investigation

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz characterized the incident as an attempted terrorist attack, citing preliminary information available to Israeli authorities.

But that conclusion had not been independently established as of Wednesday morning.

Flydubai has stopped short of assigning a motive to the cockpit confrontation.

“At this early stage, the underlying reasons and motives behind this event are unknown and remain subject to a formal investigation,” the airline said, while urging against premature conclusions as authorities gather evidence.

That distinction remains important as investigators from multiple jurisdictions examine exactly what occurred aboard the flight.

Saudi authorities reportedly detained the alleged attacker following the landing, according to Netanyahu. Saudi Arabia had not immediately released a detailed public account establishing the suspect's motive.

Emergency Creates Regional Security Alarm

The incident immediately became more sensitive because of the aircraft's destination and passenger composition.

Netanyahu said nearly all the passengers aboard the flight were Israeli.

Israel-bound commercial aviation operates under extensive security procedures because of the country's history of airline hijackings and terrorist attacks.

The transmission of an unlawful-interference signal therefore triggered an immediate response from Israeli security authorities.

The emergency landing also placed the passengers in Saudi Arabia, a country that does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Israel.

However, Saudi Arabia has allowed Israeli commercial flights to use its airspace since 2022, and Israeli passengers have previously made emergency landings in the kingdom.

Flydubai Sends Replacement Aircraft

Flydubai said it deployed two replacement aircraft to Tabuk to assist passengers and crew following the emergency landing.

The carrier said the incident had not disrupted its broader scheduled operations and emphasized that everyone aboard Flight FZ1073 had been accounted for.

Israeli authorities also arranged for passengers to continue to Israel, while emergency medical personnel prepared at Ben Gurion Airport to evaluate travelers upon arrival.

For investigators, attention will now turn toward the circumstances that allowed a violent confrontation to erupt inside the cockpit, the actions taken during the aircraft's dramatic descent and whether the episode was motivated by terrorism or another cause.

Those questions remain unresolved.
