Despite ongoing influxes of illegal immigrants from Texas, the shelter system in New York City is nearing capacity, according to the city's mayor.
Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, said in a statement that the city's system was approaching its breaking point with the influx of thousands expected every week going forward.
There have been over 11,000 illegal immigrants entering New York's shelter system over the past few months, and some of these have gone into family members' or friends' homes. Many have come from Texas, where this year federal authorities began bussing asylum seekers to Democratic-run "sanctuary cities."
Asylum claims are adjudicated in court at a later date by American authorities. Many immigrants don't appear in court and their claims are denied. Illegal immigrants are rarely deported by the authorities, especially under Biden's administration.
