The newly-elected member of Congress for Texas, Mayra Flores, said Democrats need to take her victory as a warning.

A special election took place Tuesday to elect a Mexican-born congresswoman to the House of Representatives in the Rio Grande Valley, which is located along the U.S.-Mexico border and has experienced an influx of illegal immigrants in recent months.

Analysts noted that she is the first Republican to secure a victory in the district since it was created about 10 years ago.

South Texas has been ruled by the Democrat Party for over 100 years, so they feel entitled to our votes. The party believes it is not responsible for earning our support. Our message to Washington and to the Democratic Party was that you must get to work. Flores told the outlet that if he didn't get his way, he would lose.
