PARIS, FRANCE — In a firm and dignified response to what they call “vile, fabricated smears,” French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron have taken the fight across the Atlantic, filing a defamation lawsuit against American commentator Candace Owens.

The lawsuit — a sweeping 218-page legal salvo filed in Delaware — accuses Owens of profiting from deliberate and malicious lies about the French First Lady’s identity, including the baseless and obscene claim that Madame Macron was born male and had assumed the identity of her brother. The suit further denounces equally wild assertions that President Macron was somehow a product of a CIA mind-control experiment.
To American eyes, this may appear to be another celebrity libel skirmish — but to France’s conservative nationalists, this is a battle for honor, sovereignty, and truth.
President Macron and Madame Macron are doing what any proud European statesman and wife would do when their dignity — and their country’s reputation — are under assault from transatlantic sensationalists with YouTube microphones.
“They believe it’s important to stand up for themselves,” said attorney Thomas Clare of the prestigious Clare Locke law firm. “Owens has had multiple opportunities to do the right thing and in response she has only mocked them.”
Candace Owens, known for provocative culture-war commentary and unfiltered speculation, crossed a line that no head of state or First Lady should tolerate — fabricating a gender identity conspiracy and peddling it to a global audience as entertainment.
Let’s be blunt: This wasn’t criticism. This was a smear campaign.
While many on the American right may admire Owens for “speaking her mind,” France has every right to demand accountability when its First Family is degraded by foreign influencers for clout and cash.
The Macrons, far from hiding behind PR statements or symbolic lawsuits, are prepared to travel to the U.S. personally to argue their case in court. That’s the mark of leaders with nothing to hide.
For years, the marriage of Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron has been a point of fascination — and envy — in both France and abroad. The strength of their relationship has stood the test of time, despite the difference in age and constant public scrutiny.
In truth, Brigitte Macron has come to symbolize a powerful, confident European woman, and that very image has drawn the ire of those who fear female strength wrapped in class and intellect.
President Macron has already denounced the rumors as sexist attacks, aimed not at truth, but at undermining the role of women in power. And indeed, many conservative voices in France — even among far-right circles — agree: these lies do not represent the values of Christianity, tradition, or family.
